Someone asked me the other day, “Do you think you’ll always have rabbits?”

I answered, “Well, rabbits are part of my system.”

For me, it’s all connected: family, rabbits, and garden.

The farmer feeds the rabbits, the rabbits feed the garden, and the garden feeds the family.

It’s a beautiful, balanced cycle that turns kitchen scraps, manure, hard work, and sunshine into healthy food and a more rewarding way of life. Once you’ve experienced that connection, it’s hard to imagine living any other way.

One of the things I enjoy most is saving money by growing healthy food, free from hazardous chemicals, for both my rabbits and my family. Many of the things we grow serve a dual purpose. Apple trees, pear trees, berry bushes, grape vines, cucumbers, and romaine lettuce all provide food for our family, while the rabbits enjoy their share as well. Once we harvest our carrots, even the tops find their way from the garden to the rabbitry instead of going to waste.

There is something incredibly rewarding about planting a seed, watching it grow, and eventually harvesting it. Whether it’s food for the dinner table or forage for the rabbits, I never get tired of seeing things flourish.

But watering?

That’s another story.

Living in Michigan, watering the garden isn’t always as simple as turning on a hose. Some evenings it feels like you spend 45 minutes watering, and then another 15 minutes swatting mosquitoes away from your ears, neck, legs and arms.

I love planting.

I love growing.

I love harvesting.

I just don’t love watering.

For years, I assumed irrigation systems were expensive, complicated, and difficult to install. I also didn’t want something permanent that would get in the way every time I wanted to harvest, till, add compost, or rearrange a bed.

Then I stumbled across an irrigation kit.

Honestly, I don’t even remember where I first saw it. I may have come across it on Amazon and simply decided to give it a try.

All I know is this:

Why I Love This System

This irrigation kit cost right around $50 and can easily water four to six raised beds depending on your setup.

What surprised me most was how easy it was to install.

No plumbing experience.

No special tools.

I installed the entire thing using a pair of kitchen shears and my hands.

The system uses a main water line that runs through the garden and smaller quarter-inch lines that branch off to adjustable sprinkler heads. The fittings simply push together.

Each sprinkler head can be adjusted individually.

Need more water in one area?

Open it up.

Need less water?

Turn it down.

If a sprinkler head ever gets clogged, simply unscrew it, rinse it off, and put it back on.

I also recommend adding a simple Y-splitter at your hose spigot. For about $10, you can isolate different watering zones and maintain better water pressure throughout the system.

If you want to make life even easier, connect it to a timer.

Set it for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening and let the garden take care of itself.

Perfect for Raised Beds

One of my concerns before installing irrigation was that it would become a permanent obstacle.

Fortunately, that’s not the case.

When it’s time to harvest a bed, I simply pull the sprinkler heads out of the way, harvest what I need, add compost if necessary, and put everything back where it belongs.

The system is flexible enough that it works with the garden instead of getting in the way.

This irrigation kit has been one of the best gardening purchases I’ve made in years.

It’s easy to maintain.

And most importantly, it gives me more time to enjoy the things I actually love about gardening.
