Raising Healthy Baby Rabbits: Common Mistakes to Avoid & Proven Tips for Success

Raising Healthy Baby Rabbits: Common Mistakes to Avoid & Proven Tips for Success

By Bobby – The Rabbitry Center

Raising baby rabbits (kits) can be incredibly rewarding—but it also comes with a learning curve. I’ve been seeing a lot of questions lately about losing kits, nest box issues, and general concerns around raising healthy litters.

In this post, I’m going to walk you through the most common mistakes—and more importantly—how to avoid them so you can raise strong, healthy rabbits.

🐇 Understanding a Rabbit’s Digestive System (This Is Critical)

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is feeding too many greens too early.

Baby rabbits have sensitive digestive systems. They rely heavily on something called cecotropes—a special type of fecal matter that rabbits re-ingest to absorb nutrients a second time.

Why this matters:

  • Rabbits are hindgut fermenters
  • Their body depends on this second digestion process
  • Without it, they lack the gut bacteria needed to process food properly

What goes wrong?

If kits don’t develop proper gut flora:

  • They can develop bloat
  • They may experience GI stasis
  • Diarrhea (“mud butt”) becomes common
  • In severe cases, they may not survive

What to do instead:

  • Stick to high-quality hay
  • Feed a 16% protein pellet (especially for nursing does and growing kits)
  • Avoid overfeeding greens early on

🍼 Is Mama Feeding the Kits?

A very common concern is whether the mother is nursing.

Here’s how to tell:

  • Check the babies’ bellies
  • A full, round belly = they’re being fed
  • You may even see milk through their thin skin

If they look thin or wrinkled, that’s when you need to take a closer look.

⏳ Don’t Breed Too Early

Breeding rabbits too young is a major cause of neglect.

Young does:

  • May not have strong maternal instincts yet
  • May fail to nurse or care for the litter

Recommended breeding ages:

  • Small breeds: ~5 months
  • Medium breeds: ~6 months
  • Giant breeds: ~7 months

Also remember:
👉 Litters usually get bigger over time, not smaller—so patience pays off.

🍼 Avoid Bottle Feeding (Unless Absolutely Necessary)

It’s tempting to step in and help—but bottle feeding often causes more harm than good.

Why?

  • It’s very difficult to match the fat content of rabbit milk
  • Improper feeding can lead to:
    • Diarrhea
    • Bloat
    • Death

Better option:

👉 Fostering kits to another doe

  • Even a doe that recently weaned a litter can start producing milk again
  • Rabbits are more adaptable than people realize

🧠 Reduce Stress in Your Rabbitry

Rabbits are prey animals—and stress can seriously impact them.

Common stressors:

  • Predators nearby
  • Barking dogs
  • Loud machinery
  • Constant disturbances

Stress can lead to:

  • Early kindling
  • Illness
  • Loss of kits

Keep your setup calm, quiet, and secure.

👀 Nest Box Management & Handling Kits

You can handle your kits—but don’t overdo it.

Best practices:

  • Check them regularly, but briefly
  • Make sure:
    • All kits are in the nest
    • They’re grouped together for warmth
  • If split into groups → gently cluster them back together

Timeline tips:

  • 2 weeks: Turn nest box sideways
  • 3 weeks: Introduce a hide box

The hide box:

  • Gives mama a break
  • Lets kits explore safely
  • Reduces stress for both

🛑 Prevent Escapes & Accidents

Young kits are curious—and surprisingly mobile.

Key setup tips:

  • Use baby saver wire (hardware cloth) around cages (~8 inches high)
  • Prevent access to gaps and openings
  • Modify water bowls so kits can’t:
    • Jump in
    • Escape through openings

Even small fixes can prevent big losses.

👁️ Nest Box Eye (Day 1–10 Critical Window)

Baby rabbits are born with their eyes closed.

By day 10, eyes should open naturally.

If they don’t:

  • Use a warm washcloth
  • Gently soften and massage the eyelid
  • Never force it open

If infection sets in:

You may see:

  • Swelling
  • Pus buildup

Treatment steps:

  1. Flush with saline
  2. Clean the eye
  3. Apply an ophthalmic ointment (like Terramycin)
  4. Repeat for several days

⚠️ Waiting too long makes recovery harder.

📊 Breed for Health & Keep Records

Healthy rabbits produce healthy litters—simple as that.

Focus on:

  • Strong genetics
  • Good mothering traits
  • Consistent results

Keep records of:

  • Breeding dates
  • Kindling dates
  • Litter performance
  • Rebreeding schedule

A simple tracking system can dramatically improve your success.

⚖️ Don’t Let Online Noise Discourage You

If you spend time in rabbit groups, it can feel like everything goes wrong all the time.

But here’s the truth:

👉 That’s like walking into a mechanic shop and assuming all cars are broken.

Most rabbit raisers:

  • Have healthy, productive animals
  • Deal with issues occasionally—not constantly

🏁 Final Thoughts

Rabbits are:

  • Quiet
  • Efficient
  • Easy to raise (once you understand the basics)

They can:

  • Feed your family
  • Generate income
  • Become a highly rewarding part of your life

If you stay consistent, avoid common mistakes, and focus on health—you’ll set yourself up for long-term success.
